Mostly sea bass, anchovies and shellfish on Italians' menus
Published on 14/10/2012
A survey conducted by IPSOS on Italians' food consumption reveals that nine out of ten Italians choose fish for their meals. Those who do not eat it cite taste and bones as the reasons (18%). Women who do not like it account for 24%. Among the favourite fish are sea bass (15%), anchovies and shellfish (12%). The survey was conducted on a sample of 1,000 Italians aged 25 and over and presented in Milan. The analysis also shows that half of Italians buy fish at least once a week, and this propensity increases with age.
For Italians, the essential characteristics at the fish counter are freshness (89%), origin (49%, in particular from the Mediterranean, considered safer and tastier) and price (39%). The majority (7 out of 10) claim to be able to recognise fresh fish and also to know how to cook it very well. The favourite cooking method is grilling (29%, particularly among men), followed by the oven (28%, favoured by women), while only 3% prefer it raw. For 80% it is an excellent food for a light dinner or for eating healthily (62%).
