A project to protect "designer-label" cheeses

The "Carrello dei formaggi Dop italiani" (Italian PDO Cheese Trolley) project, funded by the Mipaaf and carried out by Latteltalia in collaboration with Onaf, has reached its second edition, concluding in Rome after stops in Cremona, Bari, Milan and Treviso.
The goal is to spread knowledge of Italy's cheesemaking heritage among the general public, promoting the use of these products directly with restaurateurs.
Over the 5 stops of the national tour, the best national and local cheese specialties were presented, and the participating restaurateurs then offered a menu featuring a list of PDO cheeses.

In 2011 Italian exports of PDO cheeses came close to 1.3 billion euros, a share that bodes well against a total of just under 2 billion euros in cheese exports. Overall, 45% of the national milk supply is processed into cheeses that are "certified" by origin and therefore protected — in a word, "designer-label".
