Walking is good for you. A project for 32 cities
Published on 11/11/2012
Routes for enjoying the country's artistic and natural beauty while staying in shape. But that's not all. The “Cities for Walking” project also includes contests, marathons, lessons in schools and brochures to raise awareness among that 40% of Italians who say they do not practice any kind of physical exercise.
as Quotidiano Sanità reports:
" A sedentary lifestyle, together with other risk behaviors, can significantly increase the likelihood of being affected by cardiovascular, metabolic and cancerous diseases. In Europe, 600,000 deaths each year are attributable to inactivity, which represents one of the ten leading causes of disability and mortality in the world. But preventing many diseases is not complicated; it would be enough to move more, even just walking 3 km every day: about 5,000 steps."
It is precisely for this reason that the “Cities for Walking” project was born, involving 32 locations for now, but the goal is to reach dozens of other cities soon, so that everyone can enjoy the artistic and natural beauty of our Belpaese while keeping healthy in the meantime.
The initiative, proposed by the Fondazione Scuola del Cammino, enjoys numerous institutional patronages, including the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Health, the Senate of the Republic, the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI), the National Association of Italian Municipalities (ANCI), the Italian University Sports Center (CUSI), the Italian Hockey Federation, and scientific ones: the Italian Society of General Medicine (SIMG), the Italian Association of Medical Oncology (AIOM), Diabete Italia, Scuola del cammino and Sport Without Borders.
