Summer 2012: the NAS seize 700 tonnes of products from businesses and restaurants

Published on 17/10/2012

During the summer weeks of July, the action of the 38 NAS units stationed across the country led to the seizure of over 700 tonnes of foodstuffs of various kinds for hygiene and health reasons, inadequate storage or the presence of evident signs of product deterioration. Over 2,800 inspections were carried out, and in 37% of cases serious irregularities were found on the part of producers, sellers and restaurateurs. Among the many striking cases were a pasta factory in the Foggia area operating without any health authorisation and, in the Vercelli area, a rice mill that treated rice with a dangerous agrochemical to reduce the parasites that were massing in storage. The main fish seizures took place above all in Trieste and Palermo. In the bread-making sector, the main frauds came from certain businesses in the Perugia and Salerno areas.
