The antitumor properties of mushrooms in an American study
Published on 6/3/2013
From the USA comes the news that, in the fight against tumors, we may have a valuable ally in mushrooms.
There are in fact substances that could prove effective against cancer, according to the results of research conducted by a group of researchers from the famous MIT in Boston and from the University of Illinois (UIUC), coordinated by the chemist Mohammed Movassaghi, on a sample of over 60 compounds extracted from edible mushrooms.
In a recent study, the team coordinated by Prof. Movassaghi had synthesized a complex fungal compound called “11,11’-dideoxyverticillin”, which had already revealed some antitumor properties.
This is a substance commonly present in edible mushrooms, albeit in modest quantities, which with this study was concentrated to the point of being able to analyze in a uniform way its ability to kill tumor cells.
In the words of Prof. Movassaghi, "what was particularly exciting for us was to see, across different cancer cell lines, that some of these compounds are very potent".
