World Salt Reduction Week ended yesterday (11-17 March), three months after the memorandum of understanding signed between the Ministry of Health and the Italian Association of Food Product Industries (Aiipa), with which frozen-food producers undertook to reduce by 10% the percentage of salt within pasta and rice in frozen foods.

In Italy the average per-capita consumption of salt is estimated at about 9-11 grams per day: this quantity is more than double what is indicated by the World Health Organisation as the maximum tolerable value in adults.

This year too, the Italian Society of Human Nutrition (SINU), in collaboration with the Inter-Society Working Group for the Reduction of Sodium Consumption in Italy, is taking part in the campaign organised by World Action on Salt and Health (Reduction of daily salt intake. This year the campaign is aimed at making consumers aware of salt reduction.
